AMS Font Converter: AMS-TTY / Calligraphy Reference Mapping

AMS is a family name used across Marathi legacy-font workflows, but similar AMS names do not prove identical character mappings. The current SahayakTools AMS engine is scoped to the repository's AMS-TTY / AMS Calligraphy reference encoding; it does not claim automatic compatibility with AMS Kashi, AMS Unicode or every font whose name contains AMS.

Which AMS mapping does this converter support?

SahayakTools currently supports the AMS-TTY / AMS Calligraphy reference encoding represented by the verified mapping tables and examples in the project. Source conversion requires confirmation that the document uses that mapping.

Do not treat AMS Kashi, AMS Unicode or another AMS-named font as interchangeable just because the family name looks similar. If the exact source font/version is unknown, preserve the Word font metadata or identify the mapping before converting.

Unicode to the supported AMS mapping — and back

The supported AMS converter works in both directions:

· Unicode → AMS: representable Marathi/Hindi segments are encoded to the supported AMS-TTY / AMS Calligraphy reference mapping. English, numbers and unsupported symbols remain in normal font runs when needed.

· AMS → Unicode: confirmed source runs using the supported AMS mapping are converted to Unicode Devanagari.

Conversion runs in the browser. For mixed Unicode-to-legacy output, use Copy for Word so the required font runs are preserved.

Why exact mapping and sequence rules matter

Legacy Devanagari encodings can store matras, conjuncts and reph differently from their Unicode visual order. The converter therefore applies the mapping and positional rules for the supported AMS reference encoding rather than assuming a generic AMS keyboard layout.

Reference cases include matras and conjunct behavior, but that evidence applies to the supported mapping only. It is not evidence that every AMS variant shares the same function-key or symbol assignments.

Common problems and safe responses

Boxes or wrong glyphs: first check that the exact AMS font expected by the document is installed. A similarly named AMS font may use a different mapping.

Mixed text: preserve Word formatting so the converter can keep confirmed legacy runs separate from Unicode, English, numbers and symbols.

Unknown AMS variant: do not trial random mappings on an important document. Identify the exact font/version or leave the conversion locked rather than accepting readable-looking but incorrect output.

Copy-paste after reverse conversion: use Copy for Word when the result contains mixed legacy and normal font runs; plain TXT cannot carry those font assignments.
